Vimeo Transcript Not Available? Here's How to Fix It
Can't find transcripts on Vimeo? Here's how to extract or generate one from any public Vimeo video — and exactly which Vimeo links can't be transcribed, and why.
Unlike YouTube, Vimeo doesn't have a built-in transcript viewer. Many Vimeo videos also lack captions entirely. Here's how to get a transcript anyway.
Why Vimeo Transcripts Are Hard to Find
Vimeo is primarily used by professionals — filmmakers, educators, and businesses. While Vimeo supports captions, many creators don't add them. And unlike YouTube, Vimeo doesn't auto-generate captions.
This means:
- Many Vimeo videos have no captions at all
- There's no "Show transcript" button like YouTube
- The captions that do exist are hidden in the player config
Solution 1: SubGrab's Free Caption Extraction
If the Vimeo video has captions (even hidden ones), SubGrab can extract them:
1. Copy the Vimeo video URL
2. Paste it into SubGrab
3. Click "Get Transcript"
4. Download as TXT, SRT, or VTT
SubGrab works with public videos, most unlisted videos (with the privacy hash in the URL), and videos embedded on other sites. What it can't reach are links Vimeo puts behind a sign-in — private videos, password-protected ones, and some newer unlisted uploads. Vimeo has been tightening this through 2026, so if a link fails with "requires a login", that's why, and retrying won't change it.
Solution 2: AI Transcription for Videos Without Captions
When a Vimeo video has no captions at all, SubGrab's AI transcription can help:
1. Paste the Vimeo URL into SubGrab
2. SubGrab will detect that no captions are available
3. Click "Transcribe with AI" (costs 1 credit)
4. AI analyzes the audio and generates a full transcript with timestamps
The AI transcription uses Groq's Whisper Large model for 98%+ accuracy, even with accents and background noise.
Common Issues and Fixes
"This video is private or embed-restricted"
- The video owner has restricted access. Try getting the direct URL with the privacy hash (e.g.,
vimeo.com/123456/abc123).
"No captions available"
- The video genuinely has no captions. Use AI transcription instead.
Unlisted video URLs
- SubGrab supports unlisted Vimeo videos when the URL includes the privacy hash, and can often discover the hash automatically via Vimeo's oEmbed API. Note that Vimeo now serves a portion of unlisted content only to signed-in viewers; those links return a clear "requires a login" message and your credit is refunded automatically.
