How to Transcribe a Password-Protected Vimeo Video
Have a Vimeo video's password? Paste the link, enter the password when SubGrab asks, and get a timestamped transcript. Nothing is charged until it unlocks.
Short answer
SubGrab can transcribe a password-protected Vimeo video if you have its password. Paste the Vimeo link and start the transcript. When Vimeo asks for a password, the video's page on SubGrab shows a Video password field: enter it and the job runs. A wrong password costs nothing, and the password is used for that one job and never stored.
A password on a Vimeo video keeps strangers out, not the people it was meant for. If the uploader gave you the password, you can watch the video, and you can get its transcript too: SubGrab asks for the password, uses it once, and gives you the text with timestamps.
What you need
- The video's link. Either the page link, like
vimeo.com/123456789, or the player link from an embed, likeplayer.vimeo.com/video/123456789. - The password the uploader shared with you. On Vimeo, the password is what lets a viewer in, with no Vimeo account needed (Vimeo Help Center).
- A SubGrab account. New accounts start with 2 free credits.
Step by step
1. Paste the Vimeo link on SubGrab and press Get Transcript.
2. A locked video has no captions SubGrab can read, so you are offered an AI transcript. Press Transcribe.
3. Before anything is charged, SubGrab checks the video. Vimeo answers that it needs a password, so you are taken to the video's page, which says: "This video is password-protected. Enter its password on this page to transcribe it — it's used for this one job and never stored."
4. Type the password into the Video password field and press Unlock & transcribe.
5. When it finishes, read the transcript or download it as TXT, SRT or VTT.
What happens to the password
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is it saved? | No. It is used for that one job and not stored in your account. |
| Is it logged? | No. It reaches the download in a private file for that job, never in a command line, so it is not written to our logs. |
| What if it is wrong? | Nothing is charged. The page says "That password didn't unlock this video", and you can try again. Passwords are case-sensitive. |
| How many tries? | Up to 10 an hour. |
| What does it cost? | 1 credit per hour of audio, confirmed before you are charged, and refunded automatically if the job fails. |
Which Vimeo videos this works for
It works when the video's privacy setting is a password: the kind that plays for anyone who types it in. It cannot work when no password opens the video:
- Private videos, shared only with chosen Vimeo accounts. There is no password to type. Ask the owner for the file, then upload it.
- Embed-only videos, which play only on the owner's own website. See embed-only Vimeo videos.
- Deleted videos. Vimeo no longer has them to play.
If a link asks you to log in rather than for a password, that is a different wall: why a Vimeo link says it needs a login. For every other kind of Vimeo link, start from the Vimeo transcript page.
Frequently asked questions
Does SubGrab store my Vimeo video password?
No. The password is used for that one transcription and is not saved to your account. It reaches the download in a private file for that job, never in a command line, so it is not written to our logs.
What happens if I type the wrong password?
Nothing is charged. The page says the password didn't unlock the video and keeps the field open for another try. Passwords are case-sensitive, and you can try up to 10 times an hour.
How much does a password-protected Vimeo transcript cost?
The same as any AI transcript: 1 credit per hour of audio, confirmed before you are charged. New accounts start with 2 free credits, and a job that fails is refunded automatically.
Can SubGrab use a password for Loom, Vidyard or other platforms?
Not today. Vimeo is the only platform where SubGrab takes a video password. For a locked video elsewhere, ask the owner for a link without a password, or download the file and upload it to SubGrab.
