Vimeo Review Link Won't Transcribe? What to Ask the Owner For
A vimeo.com/reviews/ link opens Vimeo's feedback page, not the video, and transcription tools can't fetch the video through it. How to spot one, and the two things that work instead.
Short answer
A Vimeo review link — one that starts vimeo.com/reviews/ — opens the page collaborators use to leave time-stamped feedback, not the video's own page, and transcription tools cannot fetch the video through it. SubGrab turns review links away before charging anything. What works is the video's regular link from the owner, public or unlisted with its full privacy hash, or the video file itself, uploaded directly.
You have been sent a Vimeo link to give feedback on a cut, and you want the words on paper — for notes, a script check or subtitles. You paste it into a transcription tool and it is refused. The link is fine for watching. It is the wrong kind of link for transcribing.
It is also common. Review links are the Vimeo address we turn away most often: 23 were pasted into SubGrab in the past month.
How to Tell You Have a Review Link
A review link looks like this:
vimeo.com/reviews/<long code>/videos/<number>
It opens Vimeo's review page, where collaborators watch the video and leave comments tied to moments in it. The owner creates it so other people can comment on a cut.
A regular Vimeo video link looks different:
- Public:
vimeo.com/123456789 - Unlisted:
vimeo.com/123456789/a1b2c3d4e5— the second part is the privacy hash, and it is part of the address
Why It Can't Be Transcribed From the Link
A transcription tool does not watch the page the way you do. It reads the page's data to find where the video is stored, then fetches the audio from there. SubGrab does that with yt-dlp, a widely used open-source downloader. It reads Vimeo's video pages, player links and an older style of review page (vimeo.com/<user>/review/<number>/<hash>), but not the vimeo.com/reviews/ pages Vimeo issues now.
So SubGrab tells you when you paste the link, before any credit is taken, instead of charging, failing and refunding.
What Works Instead
1. Ask the owner for the video's own link
From the video's own page on Vimeo, the owner can copy its regular link. It works when the video's privacy is set to Public or Unlisted.
For an unlisted video, the whole link matters. vimeo.com/123456789 on its own leads to a page that does not exist; vimeo.com/123456789/a1b2c3d4e5 plays. We checked this on a real unlisted video: the number alone came back "not found", and the number with its hash played. Every video link format that works lists the other Vimeo addresses SubGrab accepts.
2. Get the file and upload it
If the owner can send you the file — or you are the owner — upload it directly. Your browser pulls the audio out before anything is sent, uploads run to about 50 minutes per file, and you are charged for the audio actually transcribed. For a longer video, the regular link is the better route.
Settings That Still Won't Work
Getting the regular link only helps if the video's privacy lets a logged-out visitor play it. These do not:
- Password-protected. The password box stops every tool that is not you. The owner can switch the video to Unlisted while you transcribe it, or send the file. Vimeo link asks for a login? covers this case.
- Private, or limited to people the owner chose. Only those signed-in viewers can play it.
- Embed-only. It plays only on the owner's own website. See embed-only Vimeo videos.
If You Are the Owner
The review page is for comments. For a transcript, copy the link from the video itself, with privacy set to Public or Unlisted, and paste it on the Vimeo transcript page. If the video already has captions, SubGrab uses them for one credit flat; otherwise AI transcribes the audio for one credit per started hour of video.
Quick Checklist
- Starts vimeo.com/reviews/: ask for the video's regular link, or the file
- Number plus a second code (unlisted): paste it whole, hash included
- Asks for a password: have it set to Unlisted for now, or upload the file
- Plays only on someone's website: see the embed-only guide above
Frequently asked
Why does SubGrab say it can't read my Vimeo review link?
Because a review link opens Vimeo's feedback page rather than the video's own page, and the downloader SubGrab uses cannot fetch the video from that page. Rather than charge you, fail and refund, SubGrab refuses the link the moment you paste it. The video's regular link, or the file itself, works.
Is a Vimeo review link the same as an unlisted link?
No. An unlisted link is the video's own address with a privacy hash after the number, like vimeo.com/123456789/a1b2c3d4e5, and it transcribes as long as you keep the hash. A review link starts vimeo.com/reviews/ and opens a separate feedback page, which is the part that cannot be read.
Can I transcribe a password-protected Vimeo video?
Not from its link. A password box stops every tool that is not you. Ask the owner to set the video to Unlisted while you transcribe it, or to send you the file so you can upload it — uploads run to about 50 minutes per file.
