TikTok Video Not Available in Your Region? What Transcribing It Takes
TikTok blocks some videos by country and locks some series episodes. Why a TikTok link can fail to transcribe, which failures SubGrab now gets around, and which nobody can.
Short answer
TikTok restricts some videos by country, and the restriction applies to whatever connection fetches the video — including a transcription service's servers. SubGrab now retries a region-blocked TikTok through a US connection automatically, and you only pay if the transcript is delivered. Locked episodes of paid TikTok series can't be transcribed from a link by anyone who hasn't unlocked them.
Most TikTok links transcribe in seconds. A few fail with messages that sound alarming — "Your IP address is blocked from accessing this post", "Video not available, status code 10231" — and a few fail even though the video plays fine on your phone. Almost all of them come down to two things: where the video is being fetched from, and whether the video is paid content.
Region blocks follow the connection, not you
TikTok decides per country whether to show a video. That decision is made about whichever connection asks for the video — your phone when you watch it, a transcription service's server when you paste the link.
We measured this on two TikToks that failed for SubGrab users this month. Both were refused from Malaysia, where our servers are — including from an ordinary home connection in Malaysia, so it was the country, not a data-centre block. Both loaded every time from a US connection (12 out of 12 attempts). A UK connection loaded one of them and was refused for the other. Same videos, same minute, different answers depending only on location.
The messages TikTok returns in this situation are misleading:
- "Your IP address is blocked from accessing this post" reads like a ban. It isn't — we saw it on a plain public video that a US connection then loaded every time.
- "Video not available, status code 10231" reads like the video was deleted. It wasn't — it was available, just not where it was being asked for.
What SubGrab does now: it tries normally first, and if TikTok refuses the video for the location, it retries through a US connection automatically. If that is refused too, you are not charged: either the job is turned away before a credit is taken, or the credit is refunded automatically.
Locked episodes of paid series
TikTok lets creators sell access to some content. Its Series feature, launched in 2023, puts collections of up to 80 videos — each up to 20 minutes — behind a one-off price the creator sets. Short-drama accounts publish numbered episodes, some of them locked.
A locked episode is visible but empty: TikTok shows its title, description and episode number to everyone, and sends the video only to viewers who have unlocked it. We confirmed this on an episode that failed this week — from every location we tried, TikTok returned the episode's details and no video at all.
Nothing can transcribe that from a link, because there is nothing to transcribe. An episode that plays for you without unlocking anything isn't locked, and transcribes like any other TikTok.
The other reasons a TikTok won't transcribe
| What you see | What it means | What works |
|---|---|---|
| "Not available in this region" | TikTok restricts the video by country | SubGrab retries from the US automatically |
| A paid series or locked episode | TikTok withholds the video until it is unlocked | Free episodes only |
| "This post requires a login to view" | Age-restricted or sign-in-only post | Public videos only |
| Private account | Only approved followers can see it | Ask the creator to make it public |
| "Rate-limiting automated access" | TikTok's bot wall, a temporary coin flip | Try again in a minute |
The last one is different in kind: it is temporary and a retry usually works, which is why it is the only one on that list that tells you to try again. Why a TikTok transcript fails, then works 30 seconds later explains it, and private, unlisted, paywalled and region-locked videos covers the same questions across other platforms.
Before you paste the link
Open the TikTok in a private browser window while signed out. If it plays there, SubGrab can almost always transcribe it — and if your country is the issue, it now handles that itself. If it asks you to sign in, unlock an episode or follow an account, the transcript won't work from a link either. Frequently asked
Why does a TikTok play on my phone but fail to transcribe?
Usually because TikTok shows that video only in some countries, and the transcription service fetches it from somewhere else. The block follows the connection, not you. SubGrab now retries such videos through a US connection before giving up, and you only pay if the transcript is delivered.
What does 'Your IP address is blocked from accessing this post' mean?
Despite the wording, it is not a ban on you or on SubGrab. It is TikTok declining to serve that post to that location. We saw the same message on an ordinary public video that a US connection then loaded every time.
Can I transcribe a paid TikTok series or a locked drama episode?
Not from a link. TikTok sends the video of a locked episode only to viewers who have unlocked it; everyone else gets the title and episode number with no video. An episode that plays without unlocking anything transcribes like any other TikTok.
Am I charged when a TikTok can't be transcribed?
No. A region block is retried through a US connection first. If TikTok still refuses, the job is either turned away before a credit is taken or refunded automatically — you never pay for a transcript you didn't get.
