Why That Facebook Video Won't Transcribe (Facebook Is Handing Us a Fake Page)

Some Facebook videos transcribe in about twenty seconds. Others fail every single time, no matter how many times you paste the link, and until recently the error we gave you was spectacularly unhelpful: "the platform may have changed — please report this link."

So a few of you reported the link. Thank you. You were right to. We went and looked.

The platform had not changed. Facebook was fibbing to us, very politely, in a way we hadn't noticed.

What Facebook actually does

When our server opens a Facebook video that's restricted to logged-in viewers, Facebook does not say "you need to log in." That would be far too straightforward.

Instead it returns a perfectly normal-looking page, with a perfectly normal 200 OK, and that page is Facebook's generic "Discover popular videos" hub. Not your video. Just... videos. Some videos. Have these instead.

It is the web equivalent of asking a shop assistant where the milk is and being handed a laminated menu for a different shop.

Our extractor then goes looking for a video on that page, finds an awful lot of "Discover popular videos" and no video whatsoever, and reports the only thing it can honestly report: it couldn't make sense of the page. Which sounds an awful lot like our bug.

It wasn't. It was a locked door with a photo of a hallway taped to it.

We're fairly confident about this, incidentally, because there's a second request underneath that Facebook answers with a redirect to its login page. So somewhere in there, Facebook knows exactly what it's up to.

You cannot tell from the link. Sorry.

The first thing we checked was whether it was a particular kind of link. It is not. We went through six days of real failures and the breakdown was almost comically unhelpful:

• facebook.com/share/v/... — sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
• facebook.com/share/r/... — sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
• facebook.com/reel/... — sometimes works, sometimes doesn't
• facebook.com/watch/?v=... — you get the idea

Same link shapes, same day, same everything. Some go through, some hit the wall. It's a property of the video, not of the URL you copied. So please stop re-copying the link in different ways — we tried that for you, and it doesn't help.

The five-second test that actually works

Open the video in a private / incognito window.

That's the whole test. That's it.

An incognito window is logged out, which is exactly the state our servers are in. So:

• It plays in incognito — we can transcribe it. Paste away.
• It asks you to log in, or dumps you on the Facebook home page — we can't reach it either, and no amount of retrying will change that.

This works because it isn't a trick or a workaround. You are literally running the same request we run.

What we changed

We stopped calling this an extractor bug, because it isn't one, and telling you to report a link that's working exactly as Facebook intends is a waste of your afternoon and ours.

If Facebook won't show a video to a logged-out visitor, you now get a message that says so in plain English, and your credit comes straight back. Every failed transcript is refunded, always — that part was never in question.

The good news

This is rarer than this article probably makes it sound. Across a normal week, roughly one in fifteen Facebook videos hits the wall. The other fourteen go through fine, usually in under a minute.

And if you genuinely need the one that doesn't: if you can play it while logged in, you can screen-record or download it and use file upload instead. Same price, same transcript, and Facebook doesn't get a vote.
